Do you know your knit from your purl or are you a complete knitting novice eager to learn a new skill? We are looking for existing knitters and those who wish to learn a new craft to contribute to K2TOG, our spectacular knit graffiti installation that will welcome and celebrate the Jamaican and American teams stay in Birmingham this summer for London 2012.
Our new pop-up space will open in the Pavilions Birmingham Shopping Centre on Wednesday next week (2 May), a relaxing drop-in space where anyone can come to contribute. Staff will be on hand to teach basic knitting skills and help with any pieces that have gone awry! Whether you are waiting for a train, need to rest from all that shopping or want a break from the office at lunchtime, you are welcome to pop-in and knit a few rows or just find out more about the project. Special knitting packs will also be available to take away in order to contribute to the piece.
We estimate that it will take 1,300 balls of wool and 4, 500 hours to make the installation so we need your help! We want the piece to be knitted by the proud people of the region, a colourful, personal, visually spectacular welcome to the teams. We also aim to pass on the skill of hand knitting to those who have little experience of traditional crafts. The installation will be unveiled to coincide with the beginning of the Olympic Games, and will remain until the end of September.
We’re still crowd-funding in order to raise the money that is needed to help fund workshops and the pop-up space. Those wishing to donate to the project should visit: http://tinyurl.com/Knit2Together Even a pound will make a great difference.
The K2TOG pop-up space will be open from 2 May to 27 July 2012, Wednesdays to Saturday 12-6pm and Sundays 12-5pm. It is located on the lower ground floor of the Pavilions, opposite Laura Ashley. We hope to see you there soon!
